I’m pretty sure that not having my own designated space would be hard for me. When I worked in an office I was sensitive to where my desk was placed: who was near me, the air conditioner vents, traffic flow, sounds, etc. Now that I work for myself I have my “official” desk in my home office and often enjoy field trips to work in coffee shops. That feels different to me than not having a space the way this article is describing it.

Question for you free agents: How much difference does it make where you work, and whether or not you have a permanent work space? Would love to hear your comments!

Source: Harvard Business Review Daily Stat for MAY 4, 2012

Will You Be Asked to Give Up Your Personal Work Space?
60% of 950 companies surveyed by the International Facility Management Association say they now have unassigned work spaces in their offices, and about half say the number of employees using unassigned desks has risen over the past two years, according to the Wall Street Journal. In an effort to boost creativity and save on space, American Express designates some 20% of the 5,000 people at its New York headquarters as “club” employees, meaning that they’re on site less than full time and work at unassigned desks.

April’s almost over and I can hardly believe it – seems like it should still

be February. Spring has been nice in San Francisco, and I know it’s Spring

because my allergies have kicked into gear. I’m enjoying the sense of
renewal, the flowers and I even played hooky to watch a pre season baseball
game between the Giants and the A’s. What Spring activities are you up to?
Today you can reflect on Spring as you read the article; perhaps a sense of
renewal and understanding will come newly your way.

Enjoy ~

Kris

====================

What’s this about?
This past weekend I participated in Aggie Muster. In case you’re not
sure what that is, it all stems from Texas A&M University, home of the
Fightin’ Texas Aggies. Muster started in 1883 and every year since Aggies
have followed the tradition: “If there is an A&M man in one-hundred miles of
you, you are expected to get together, eat a little, and live over the days
you spent at the A&M College of Texas.” A role call of the fallen is also
included, and the living answer “here” for their comrades.

I went to Texas A&M because my step-Dad wanted me to. He loves the Military
tradition and all the mystique that goes along with it. I just wanted to
get through college and figure out what I wanted to do and what school I did
that at didn’t much matter to me. So over the years I’ve wondered why I
went there (beyond the obvious reason I just stated), what I got out of it,
what that whole part of my life was about.

Muster day, this past Saturday, found me surrounded by Aggies. Since I’m
the Strategic Adviser on the Board of Directors for the local club I
participated in presenting the Muster program. I ate BBQ. I lived over the
old days. I made new friends and deepened friendships. And I listened to
Barry Stevens, Class of ’83 and a 12th Man, talk about the community that
brought us together. That’s when I got it — going to Texas A&M for me was
about the people and the community, things that I value very highly and that
I actively court in my life today. Thank you, Barry, for pointing out the
obvious to me, even it it did take 20+ years for me to understand. I get it
now. Gig ‘em!

Your turn: What has it taken you a long time to understand? What light
bulb finally flipped and you all of a sudden saw what you had been missing?

~~~
_Easy as Pie_
Have you ever noticed when you put focused attention on something that a lot
of times something else gets easier? A colleague shared with me that as she
put more attention on her money life – cleaning up bills, balancing the
check book and the like – she suddenly felt as though she had more time.
The literal amount of time in her days and weeks didn’t change, she still
worked the same amount, spent the same amount of time with her husband,
etc., and yet she had the experience of more time.
All the parts of our lives touch, so it makes sense that as we shift one
part of our life another part will shift, too. Think of it as a big pie;
all the slices touch, so the goodness of one piece will rub off on another
piece.
What area are you focusing on right now? Maybe there’s some aspect of your
business that you’d like to shift – how can you apply this principle to make
that shift easier? Can you put more attention on your cash flow, for
example, and leverage that increased vitality in the service of having more
fun, or gaining new business? Hit reply and let me know how you’re using
this principle ~ and do it today! It’s fun and easy, and easy is yummy.
=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=
Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope today finds you in love with your work and
your life; I’ll share a few thoughts on that below. In the meantime, hug
someone, give your dog some scratchies behind the ears, and have yourself
and amazing day – I sincerely love that you are a part of my life.
Hugs to you ~
Kris
-Loving Your Work and Your Life-
I was talking with a colleague the other day when I heard myself saying, “I
love my life and work. Sure, there are things I’d like to tweak or to
somehow be different, but that’s got nothing to do with whether I love my
life or not.” His reply was, “How do you reconcile that inherent
contradiction?” The question stopped me for a minute, because I don’t see a
contradiction, just two distinct things that co-exist: 1. I love my life and
work as is; 2. I’d like some things to be different.
It’s perfectly OK to not love every little thing that’s going on in your
world: clients who pay late or keep expanding the scope of the project so it
feels you’ll never be done, your kitchen sink is leaking…again, your
dishes still haven’t figured out how to do themselves. Nevertheless, you
can love what is present, name it, be grateful for it, and express that
gratitude to yourself in a journal or to others in a conversation. It might
look like this:
- I’m grateful for my client Bob who has brought in more work that we
orginally expected and now I have a chance to show off other skills and
talents.
- I’m happy my clients send me referrals.
- I love it that my life flows with ease when I relax.
Take a look around your life and business. Notice what you love, and what
you’d like to tweak or change. Make a list of both. The _what you love_
list gets posted where you can see it regularly; the _what you’d like to
change_ list turns into to do items and projects you can work on over time.
Try this out for a week and let me know how it goes — I’m guessing you’ll
Wednesday, Jan 25th
a message from
=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=
I spent this past Sunday like many in the Bay Area, watching the NFL playoff
games to see if the 49ers were going to the Super Bowl. Alas, they are not,
and yet I had a great time being out with others, enjoying old friends and
talking to new people around me. As I watched the crowd I noticed how happy
and engrossed they all seemed, which reminded me of “The Value of
Happiness”, the most recent issue of the Harvard Business Review. More of
my thoughts on that below. Here’s to your happiness.
Kris
The Value of Happiness
The January-February 2012 issue of the Harvard Business Review is about the
Value of Happiness and they have some great articles about what happiness
means to us as individuals, as managers and participants in a company, and
as a country. One of my favorite revelations of these articles is from
[1]Daniel Gilbert, and Harvard psychology professor, who says that
“…people are happiest when they’re appropriately challenged – when they’re
trying to achieve goals that are difficult but not out of reach.” I have
had many a client who claims to be more motivated by stretch goals, yet when
we renegotiate the end goal to be a stretch but not a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal
they relax and actually get more done.
There is a fine line of being on the edge as a good thing vs. being too much
on the edge – a challenge that makes us want to do more vs. a challenge that
is so far out of reach that we feel disincentivised even before we begin.
The more challenged you are, in a good way, the more you’ll get done and the
happier you’ll be ~ seems like a pretty easy equation, right? Test this out
this week and see what happens: set out a “good” challenge for yourself and
notice how happy you feel and how you work toward it, then report the
results back to me. I bet you’ll be right on target, happy-wise and
work-wise
=REIGNITE YOUR BUSINESS PASSION!=
Already have a good business? Feel like you could use a little polishing up
in the passion department, a bit of a kickstart to turn up the heat, a
slight tweak to make it even more amazing?
“Let Your Business Turn You On” is a system I’ve designed to do just that!
We’ll apply the overall tenents of the system and tailor the details to meet
a message from
=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=
Happy Friday! It’s been a full couple of weeks here: I’ve attended 3 – 2 to
3 day workshops, hatched a new idea for a product I think you’ll like (stay
tuned) and had some great times with friends and colleagues. All of this
has been great fun as well as challenging; more on that below. For now
let’s lean into this fabulous Friday and let it carry us forth into the
weekend
Enjoy ~
Kris
-It’s Going To Be OK-
Do you ever feel like what you’re doing doesn’t make sense? Or that you
have something to convey, yet you’re having a hard time getting your point
across? Or maybe you’re following the energy, going where it leads you, and
it’s not going in a straight line and you find yourself thinking, *what the
hell…?*
My coach, friend and mentor, [1]Andrea Lee, turned me on to a video some
years ago that I think you’ll appreciate: [2]Imagination
Links:
1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeXuZexUIc4
Truth is, this is how the last 5 weeks have been for me. I’m minding my own
business, following the energy and all kinds of crazy stuff, personally and
professionally, has shown up. I put on my energetic seatbelt, strapped
myself in for the bumpy ride and have been going along as best I can. And,
while I have an general idea of the direction I’m heading, it’s not clear.
This requires faith and a certain amount of letting go – much like our
little friend in the video. His vision was clear, no one understood it, and
I’m imagining a time or two he may have questioned his actions.
nevertheless, he stuck to it and made a fantastic picture.
This is how is goes for us as humans – not always privy to the bigger
picture yet hanging on none the less, clinging on to however much of our
vision we have access to. What wild ride might you find yourself on right
now? How can you relax into into it so as to make the ride go more
smoothly? What energetic seatbelt might you employ to feel more grounded as
you go along? Hit reply – I’d love to have a companion on this ride!!
Thank you, Naomi Dunford, for always being willing to point out that the Emperor has no clothes    If you don’t know about Naomi yet, you’re gunna want to – check her out: http://ittybiz.com/
Enjoy!
———————-
Allow me to go on a little rant, please. This one is going to make
a lot of your fellow marketers mad, so you might want to read all
the way to the end.
EVERYBODY seems to be doing a webinar these days.
And the ninjas keep getting emails from people asking if
webinar-du-jour is worth attending.
This seems to be ask-Naomi-about-webinars season. Ask and I shall
answer, darling.
There are really only 3 reasons you should go to ANY webinar:
.
#1 –  If you find the presenter very, very, very entertaining.
.
I’ve watched maybe 6 good webinars in all the years I’ve run
IttyBiz.  One was useful.  The other 5 were by people I loved to
listen to or who knew how to make the webinar a really good time.
If you think a webinar will be fun as hell, then by all means
attend it as entertainment.  It’s that or CSI.
.
#2 – If there’s something CONCRETE that you know FOR A FACT you’re
going to learn.
.
Most webinars are infomercials selling you on a CONCEPT.
“Concept X is awesome.”
“Soon (but not quite yet!) I will tell you more about how awesome
Concept X really is.”
“When you buy my product (which just happens to be about Concept X,
and which also happens to be coming out very soon but only for a
limited time) you’ll be SO successful!”
Now, if they’re teaching something concrete – like “How to install
WordPress” or “How to write a great headline” – then it’s
worthwhile.  You will actually be smarter at the end.
But if it’s just “How to do this awesome non-specific thing that
sounds good on paper,” don’t go.  Just google “How to install
WordPress” instead because THAT will actually help you.
(A little hint here: If there’s something concrete inside, they put
it in the title. Always. I have never even HEARD of an exception to
this rule.)
.
#3 – If you want to confirm your suspicions that the presenter is a
big, fat, sucky sham.
.
This is the one thing webinars ARE good for.  Most webinars are
launch content – the content a seller (like me) will release right
before a product launch to drum up interest.
.
VERY IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW:
.
The quality and tone of traditional launch content is ALWAYS equal
to (or slightly better than) the quality and tone of the product.
Always.
Always, always, always.
People put their best possible stuff in there because they’re
trying to sell you something.
There’s nothing wrong with that.  Your launch stuff SHOULD be the
best stuff you’ve got. You’re crazy not to do it this way.
But think about that for a minute.
.
If you go to a webinar and see something mediocre, you are seeing
the ABSOLUTE BEST that seller has to offer.
.
If the webinar is:
flashy,
vague,
hypey,
self-indulgent,
full of unkept promises,
or leaves you hanging until the next installment,
…rest assured, you will find all of these fine qualities (and
more!) in the paid product.
So webinars could be good for you (not so much for the seller) if
you go in with a critical mind to find out what the best they’ve
got really is.
Now, if thinking about all that seems like a lot of work and you
would like a handy, boilerplate decision making template, I just
happen to have one for you right here:
How to decide, once and for all…
Would you drive 50 miles to see it in person?
Would you pay $50 cash for it when you got there?
If no, don’t go.
And if you need an even shorter version:
.
Don’t go to that f#@%ing webinar.
.
xx
Naomi
=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=
Hello!
The weather is turning chilly – looks like it
finally might be winter. I’m hunkering down letting ideas and new
possibilities for the year emerge and am quite pleased and surprised with
some of what is showing up. Once the thoughts have more fully formed I’ll
say more; for now, I’m letting it all marinate. Hopefully 2012 is off to a
good start on your New Year’s ideas waiting to be born ~ have fun marinating
in the meanwhile.
Kris
*How does she do it? *
I have a client who is amazing at creating what she wants in life and
business. As I thought of her this week I marveled at all she has achieved
over the past several years: a fantastic man in her life, as much work as
she can literally do (she’s a solopreneur), more money than she needs so
she’s able to save and travel, and a host of loving friends and family. And
while I know her to be an extraordinary woman, her big secret to all this
success is something the rest of us know and I think sometimes
forget….clarity about who we are, what we want in our life, and belief
that we can have it, combined with inspired, consistent action. If I were
to make a math formula it would look like this:
self knowledge + clarity on what you want + belief you can have it + action
= **fabulousity**
Take a look at this formula and ask yourself if any of these pieces feels
lacking. Maybe you’re clear on what you want but don’t totally figure you
can get it. Or you’ve been meaning to do some self introspective work yet
haven’t set aside the time. The good news is that this is my kind of math -
pretty straight forward stuff. Just dive in where ever makes sense and go
from there; it’s a forgiving formula that will produce results with just the
slightest tweak.
Play around with this for 2-4 weeks and see what happens. Pick one area of
your business or life you’d like to move forward and see what you can
create. Let math work for you, and let me know how it goes, OK?
* Let Your Business Turn You On *
Coaching Opportunity
If you’ve been considering coaching now is the perfect time to take a look
at your business, see what is and what isn’t working, and tweak as
necessary. And, it’s a great time to add new ideas and fresh perspective
(just like I mentioned is happening to me – this can be exciting!)
“Using my Let Your Business Turn You On System” you’ll have the chance to
dig into yourself and your business in a way that affects the change you
want – whether that’s global domination or more ease and flow to your day.
Curious? Schedule a _[1]Discovery Session _and let’s talk ~ I’m excited to
work with you!
a message from
=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=
Happy New Year! I’m pleased to report from this first Monday of 2012 that it
looks like a good year ahead and I’m excited to share this coming year with
you. Today’s message is designed for you to take just a few, quick minutes
and set the stage for 2012, as well as let go of anything lingering. I hope
you had a wonderful 2011 and wish you all the best in 2012!
Cheerily Yours ~
Kris
~
Quick & Easy Exercise to Set Yourself Up for Success in the New Year
The turning of the year provides a convenient marker to look at what has
been happening in your life, as well as what you’d like to create going
forward ~ an opportunity to take stock on where you’re at, remember what’s
important, and take a look at what’s ahead. While we could ship you off to
India to reflect on this, or have you spend three days meditating, chances
are you may not have that kind of time available. With that in mind, try
this down and dirty “quickie” to accomplish the same thing. Grab your
kitchen timer (or use this free [1]online timer), set it for 15 minutes, and
follow these simple steps designed to let go of the past and make the most
of the year to come.
1. What do you want to leave behind? Not everything that happens is
something you want to repeat, so take a minute and think about what you
could do without from 2011. Make a quick bullet point list on whatever is
handy (napkin? envelope?) – remember, we’re on the quickie path here. Things
you may want to leave behind: saying yes too much, settling for less, people
who don’t support you.
Links:
1. http://www.bulletstopwatch.com/countdown-timer
2. What do you want to bring with you into 2012? Reviewing all the
highlights of the year, jot down on a new napkin or envelope what you want
to make sure you have more of. Apple pie? Yummy. Fantastic clients? You
bet. Meaningful time with friends and family? Right on!
3. Grab a new napkin and set a theme for 2012. A theme provides a guiding
idea, a mantra you can keep in your hip pocket which serves as a filter for
what you do, an inspirational thought that compells you forward. Some of my
personal favorite themes from the past have included “simple”, “freedom”,
“drink more champagne”. You can get inspiration for your theme by looking
over your _leave behind_ and _take with_ lists, or maybe there’s something
that has been on your mind that you’re ready to go for?
4. Post your lists and theme where you can see them regularly – near the
computer, on the fridge, or even write them with a dry erase marker on your
bathroom mirror. By giving yourself these 15 minutes you’ve just hugely
increased the chances that 2012 will be the kind of year you want it to be -
nice work
I’d love to hear what you’re letting go of, what you’re taking with you, and
what your theme is; please email me and let me know. Good for you for
getting this year off to a great start!!
~
=GET *STUFF* DONE DAY THIS FRIDAY=
First of all, THANK YOU to the early adopters of get *stuff* done day. It’s
inaugural voyage in December was a huge hit. Here is a bit of feedback from
the participants:
“Thank you for one of the most productive, intriguing and unique experiences
of the year! I love the elegance of GSDD (and what does that “s” really
stand for???? ) I suspect that others like me (ADHD) would find the process
particularly beneficial, especially since there is no downside.”
Thanks for offering that call yesterday – I thought it was awesome. It gave
me a new perspective on getting something DONE! As the hour would progress
I’d force myself to get SOMETHING COMPLETED, which would never have happened
without our little accountability group! Posting my paintings on
Craigslist actually only took 10 minutes and not the 5 days that I wasted
procrastinating, thinking it would take longer.
get *stuff* done day (gsdd)
Here’s a fun, community supported solution: get *stuff* done day. The idea is simple: during certain hours we’ll come together virtually with our individual to do lists and the aim of getting *stuff* done! Once a month, for 4 hours, you’ll be able to concentrate on contacting clients, reading professional material, cleaning up those piles on your desk, or whatever else is weighing on your mind. Organizing this monthly event has been in the works for me for some time and I’m excited to bring it to you and give your ideas, unfinished business, pending projects and dreams the attention they deserve!What are the benefits of get *stuff* done day?
* A set time where you can hang out the do-not-disturb sign and focus on accomplishing what is most pressing for you.
* A community of like-minded people with whom to share your tasks, offer and receive support, and be accountable. We really do care if you get *stuff* done or not and how it’s going for you!
* Access to coaching should you feel stuck along the way.
* A fun and easy way to do those things you may have been putting off.
* A quick way to establish a pattern of action that can carry you through the rest of the month.Who can participate?
gsdd is open to all who are interested. Come, bring a friend or colleague, and expand your network of support.
How much does it cost?
It’s f*r*e*e. Complimentary. On the house.
When does it happen?
The first Friday of every month from 10 – 2 PT (1 – 5 ET). The first gsdd is December 2, the next January 6, etc.
Where does it happen?
On the phone. I have a telephone conference call line we’ll use each month.
How long does it take?
Each event is 4 hours long, with a quick call at the top of the hour and the rest of the hour devoted to taking action.
What if I can’t stay the whole time?
You may participate as your schedule permits. Of course, the more time you devote, the more you’ll get done
Logistcially, how does it work?
1. Mark the date and time on your calendar.
2. Verify the phone number for the conference call line (normal long distance rates will apply).
3. Call in at the top of the hour. I and the other participants will gather on the call with you.
4. Each person has 30 seconds to introduce themselves and share what they want to accomplish in the next hour. Once everyone has spoken, we all hang up and get busy.
5. You spend the remainder of the hour getting *stuff* done!
6. At the top of the next hour call back into the conference call line, take 30 seconds and share how well you did with your task, then announce what the next hour’s task will be (it’s OK if it’s the same thing as the previous hour).
7. Rinse and repeat until all the hours of the get *stuff* done day are complete. There is a final call at the end of the last hour to wrap up for the day.
8. The total call time each hour is short, as the point is simply to announce yourself and your intentions, and then hang up and get busy!
9. I will be there each hour, facilitating and making sure you are making progress, as well as offering coaching if you hit a snag.
10. At the end of the day you have more accomplished than you did when you started – time to celebrate!!
