Great info re: webinars from a marketing genius

Posted by on Feb 2, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Thank you, Naomi Dunford, for always being willing to point out that the Emperor has no clothes :)  If you don’t know about Naomi yet, you’re gunna want to – check her out: http://ittybiz.com/
Enjoy!
———————-
Allow me to go on a little rant, please. This one is going to make
a lot of your fellow marketers mad, so you might want to read all
the way to the end. :)
EVERYBODY seems to be doing a webinar these days.
And the ninjas keep getting emails from people asking if
webinar-du-jour is worth attending.
This seems to be ask-Naomi-about-webinars season. Ask and I shall
answer, darling.
There are really only 3 reasons you should go to ANY webinar:
.
#1 –  If you find the presenter very, very, very entertaining.
.
I’ve watched maybe 6 good webinars in all the years I’ve run
IttyBiz.  One was useful.  The other 5 were by people I loved to
listen to or who knew how to make the webinar a really good time.
If you think a webinar will be fun as hell, then by all means
attend it as entertainment.  It’s that or CSI.
.
#2 – If there’s something CONCRETE that you know FOR A FACT you’re
going to learn.
.
Most webinars are infomercials selling you on a CONCEPT.
“Concept X is awesome.”
“Soon (but not quite yet!) I will tell you more about how awesome
Concept X really is.”
“When you buy my product (which just happens to be about Concept X,
and which also happens to be coming out very soon but only for a
limited time) you’ll be SO successful!”
Now, if they’re teaching something concrete – like “How to install
WordPress” or “How to write a great headline” – then it’s
worthwhile.  You will actually be smarter at the end.
But if it’s just “How to do this awesome non-specific thing that
sounds good on paper,” don’t go.  Just google “How to install
WordPress” instead because THAT will actually help you.
(A little hint here: If there’s something concrete inside, they put
it in the title. Always. I have never even HEARD of an exception to
this rule.)
.
#3 – If you want to confirm your suspicions that the presenter is a
big, fat, sucky sham.
.
This is the one thing webinars ARE good for.  Most webinars are
launch content – the content a seller (like me) will release right
before a product launch to drum up interest.
.
VERY IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW:
.
The quality and tone of traditional launch content is ALWAYS equal
to (or slightly better than) the quality and tone of the product.
Always.
Always, always, always.
People put their best possible stuff in there because they’re
trying to sell you something.
There’s nothing wrong with that.  Your launch stuff SHOULD be the
best stuff you’ve got. You’re crazy not to do it this way.
But think about that for a minute.
.
If you go to a webinar and see something mediocre, you are seeing
the ABSOLUTE BEST that seller has to offer.
.
If the webinar is:
flashy,
vague,
hypey,
self-indulgent,
full of unkept promises,
or leaves you hanging until the next installment,
…rest assured, you will find all of these fine qualities (and
more!) in the paid product.
So webinars could be good for you (not so much for the seller) if
you go in with a critical mind to find out what the best they’ve
got really is.
Now, if thinking about all that seems like a lot of work and you
would like a handy, boilerplate decision making template, I just
happen to have one for you right here:
How to decide, once and for all…
Would you drive 50 miles to see it in person?
Would you pay $50 cash for it when you got there?
If no, don’t go.
And if you need an even shorter version:
.
Don’t go to that f#@%ing webinar.
.
xx

How Does She Do It?

=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=

Hello!

The weather is turning chilly – looks like it
finally might be winter. I’m hunkering down letting ideas and new
possibilities for the year emerge and am quite pleased and surprised with
some of what is showing up. Once the thoughts have more fully formed I’ll
say more; for now, I’m letting it all marinate. Hopefully 2012 is off to a
good start on your New Year’s ideas waiting to be born ~ have fun marinating
in the meanwhile.

Kris

*How does she do it? *

I have a client who is amazing at creating what she wants in life and
business. As I thought of her this week I marveled at all she has achieved
over the past several years: a fantastic man in her life, as much work as
she can literally do (she’s a solopreneur), more money than she needs so
she’s able to save and travel, and a host of loving friends and family. And
while I know her to be an extraordinary woman, her big secret to all this
success is something the rest of us know and I think sometimes
forget….clarity about who we are, what we want in our life, and belief
that we can have it, combined with inspired, consistent action. If I were
to make a math formula it would look like this:

self knowledge + clarity on what you want + belief you can have it + action
= **fabulousity**

Take a look at this formula and ask yourself if any of these pieces feels
lacking. Maybe you’re clear on what you want but don’t totally figure you
can get it. Or you’ve been meaning to do some self introspective work yet
haven’t set aside the time. The good news is that this is my kind of math -
pretty straight forward stuff. Just dive in where ever makes sense and go
from there; it’s a forgiving formula that will produce results with just the
slightest tweak.

Play around with this for 2-4 weeks and see what happens. Pick one area of
your business or life you’d like to move forward and see what you can
create. Let math work for you, and let me know how it goes, OK?

* Let Your Business Turn You On *
Coaching Opportunity
If you’ve been considering coaching now is the perfect time to take a look
at your business, see what is and what isn’t working, and tweak as
necessary. And, it’s a great time to add new ideas and fresh perspective
(just like I mentioned is happening to me – this can be exciting!)

“Using my Let Your Business Turn You On System” you’ll have the chance to
dig into yourself and your business in a way that affects the change you
want – whether that’s global domination or more ease and flow to your day.

Get 2012 Off to a Great Start, Real Quick Like

=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=

Happy New Year! I’m pleased to report from this first Monday of 2012 that it

looks like a good year ahead and I’m excited to share this coming year with
you. Today’s message is designed for you to take just a few, quick minutes
and set the stage for 2012, as well as let go of anything lingering. I hope
you had a wonderful 2011 and wish you all the best in 2012!

Cheerily Yours ~

Quick & Easy Exercise to Set Yourself Up for Success in the New Year

The turning of the year provides a convenient marker to look at what has
been happening in your life, as well as what you’d like to create going
forward ~ an opportunity to take stock on where you’re at, remember what’s
important, and take a look at what’s ahead. While we could ship you off to
India to reflect on this, or have you spend three days meditating, chances
are you may not have that kind of time available. With that in mind, try
this down and dirty “quickie” to accomplish the same thing. Grab your
kitchen timer (or use this free [1]online timer), set it for 15 minutes, and
follow these simple steps designed to let go of the past and make the most
of the year to come.

1. What do you want to leave behind? Not everything that happens is
something you want to repeat, so take a minute and think about what you
could do without from 2011. Make a quick bullet point list on whatever is
handy (napkin? envelope?) – remember, we’re on the quickie path here. Things
you may want to leave behind: saying yes too much, settling for less, people
who don’t support you.
Links:
1. http://www.bulletstopwatch.com/countdown-timer

2. What do you want to bring with you into 2012? Reviewing all the
highlights of the year, jot down on a new napkin or envelope what you want
to make sure you have more of. Apple pie? Yummy. Fantastic clients? You
bet. Meaningful time with friends and family? Right on!

3. Grab a new napkin and set a theme for 2012. A theme provides a guiding
idea, a mantra you can keep in your hip pocket which serves as a filter for
what you do, an inspirational thought that compells you forward. Some of my
personal favorite themes from the past have included “simple”, “freedom”,
“drink more champagne”. You can get inspiration for your theme by looking
over your _leave behind_ and _take with_ lists, or maybe there’s something
that has been on your mind that you’re ready to go for?

4. Post your lists and theme where you can see them regularly – near the
computer, on the fridge, or even write them with a dry erase marker on your
bathroom mirror. By giving yourself these 15 minutes you’ve just hugely
increased the chances that 2012 will be the kind of year you want it to be -
nice work :)

I’d love to hear what you’re letting go of, what you’re taking with you, and
what your theme is; please email me and let me know. Good for you for
getting this year off to a great start!!

=GET *STUFF* DONE DAY THIS FRIDAY=

First of all, THANK YOU to the early adopters of get *stuff* done day. It’s
inaugural voyage in December was a huge hit. Here is a bit of feedback from
the participants:

“Thank you for one of the most productive, intriguing and unique experiences
of the year! I love the elegance of GSDD (and what does that “s” really
stand for???? ) I suspect that others like me (ADHD) would find the process
particularly beneficial, especially since there is no downside.”

Thanks for offering that call yesterday – I thought it was awesome. It gave
me a new perspective on getting something DONE! As the hour would progress
I’d force myself to get SOMETHING COMPLETED, which would never have happened
without our little accountability group! Posting my paintings on
Craigslist actually only took 10 minutes and not the 5 days that I wasted
procrastinating, thinking it would take longer.

Welcome!

Happy Fall Day! Today I’m pulling together a few odds and ends to share with you, most notably gsdd – get *stuff* done day, which I’m pretty excited to get started; I look forward to having you participate in it’s inaugural voyage. More info below.Things are cool and crisp here in San Francisco and I am enjoying feeling the weather change, watching college football, and anticipating Thanksgiving. What are your favorite things about Fall? Whatever they may be I hope you’re enjoying them all.
Warmly,
Kris
Announcing a new coaching feature starting Friday, Dec. 2:
get *stuff* done day (gsdd)

Isn’t it the way sometimes that you have a lot you want to do and it feels like there’s not enough time to do it? Here’s a fun, community supported solution: get *stuff* done day. The idea is simple: during certain hours we’ll come together virtually with our individual to do lists and the aim of getting *stuff* done! Once a month, for 4 hours, you’ll be able to concentrate on contacting clients, reading professional material, cleaning up those piles on your desk, or whatever else is weighing on your mind. Organizing this monthly event has been in the works for me for some time and I’m excited to bring it to you and give your ideas, unfinished business, pending projects and dreams the attention they deserve! What are the benefits of get *stuff* done day?
* A set time where you can hang out the do-not-disturb sign and focus on accomplishing what is most pressing for you.
* A community of like-minded people with whom to share your tasks, offer and receive support, and be accountable. We really do care if you get *stuff* done or not and how it’s going for you!
* Access to coaching should you feel stuck along the way.
* A fun and easy way to do those things you may have been putting off.
* A quick way to establish a pattern of action that can carry you through the rest of the month.Who can participate?
gsdd is open to all who are interested. Come, bring a friend or colleague, and expand your network of support.

How much does it cost?
It’s f*r*e*e. Complimentary. On the house.

When does it happen?
The first Friday of every month from 10 – 2 PT (1 – 5 ET). The first gsdd is December 2, the next January 6, etc.

Where does it happen?
On the phone. I have a telephone conference call line we’ll use each month.

How long does it take?
Each event is 4 hours long, with a quick call at the top of the hour and the rest of the hour devoted to taking action.

What if I can’t stay the whole time?
You may participate as your schedule permits. Of course, the more time you devote, the more you’ll get done :)

Logistcially, how does it work?
1. Mark the date and time on your calendar.
2. Verify the phone number for the conference call line (normal long distance rates will apply).
3. Call in at the top of the hour. I and the other participants will gather on the call with you.
4. Each person has 30 seconds to introduce themselves and share what they want to accomplish in the next hour. Once everyone has spoken, we all hang up and get busy.
5. You spend the remainder of the hour getting *stuff* done!
6. At the top of the next hour call back into the conference call line, take 30 seconds and share how well you did with your task, then announce what the next hour’s task will be (it’s OK if it’s the same thing as the previous hour).
7. Rinse and repeat until all the hours of the get *stuff* done day are complete. There is a final call at the end of the last hour to wrap up for the day.
8. The total call time each hour is short, as the point is simply to announce yourself and your intentions, and then hang up and get busy!
9. I will be there each hour, facilitating and making sure you are making progress, as well as offering coaching if you hit a snag.
10. At the end of the day you have more accomplished than you did when you started – time to celebrate!!

Beyond SMART Goals

Posted by on Oct 24, 2011 in Entrepreneurial Mindset, Newsletter, Vision | 0 comments

Happy Friday! I hope this day finds you doing well and enjoying Fall. Here

in SF I’m happy to have our Indian summer going strong, which makes me happy

:)

Recently I gave a keynote speech at the SF EARN conference, and in
preparation for my talk many of the savers shared with me how hard it is to
keep going toward their goal when things get tough. This is true for all of
us – we make a plan, set a SMART goal, and start working toward it only to
get thrown off course by something unexpected or loose steam if we don’t see
immediate results. Today I’m sharing a few ideas about keeping going beyond
SMART goals which I hope will help you stay on track with your current goals
and dreams!

Warmly,

Kris
……………………………………………………

Beyond SMART Goals

Setting a SMART goal is one of the first things we ususally do when trying
to accomplish something. As a quick review, it’s an acronym for Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Based. This criteria helps
define what you’re after, why you want it, and by when you’ll have it. But
what happens when having the criteria alone doesn’t cut it? What about
those days when you don’t feel like doing the work, everything you’ve tried
feels like it’s not producing the results you want, and just generally
you’ve got a black cloud over your head?

Here are some suggestions for going beyond SMART goals when you’re just not
feeling it:

_R stands for Relevant_. Remember why this goal is important to you. Often
times goals are set with a nod toward relevancy, but take a look at what’s
deeper. On that “I’m solving world peace” kind of level, why do you want
this goal? [1]Simon Sinek has a great TED talk where he eloborates on this
concept – connecting with and remembering the _why_ you are doing something
is one of the main ways to keep going on those black cloud days.
Links:
1. http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html

_Your goal is a journey as much as a destination_. It’s easy to get focused
on the final outcome and put your blinders on to what’s happening between
now and then, to simply take action and keep going. Would it be alright
with you to breath and realize that the journey was the point, just as much
as the destination? It seems kinda crazy to push on through something that
you could be enjoying – kinda like driving through beautiful scenery, but
going 100 mph so that you never get to experience what’s around you. Try
this mantra: “I’m journey happy as well as destination happy.”

_Decide and Believe_. Double check your internal radar – have you _really_
decided that you can have this goal, and do you believe that you’ll really
reach it? If you haven’t decided and don’t believe then the likelyhood of
you acheiving your goal goes down significantly. Declaring a goal is one
thing; really embracing it on the decide and believe level is a whole
‘nother way to set yourself up for success.

_Finish unfinished business_. You may wonder what unfinished business has
to do with acheiving goals, but the impact can be huge. Anything that feels
incomplete – a debt you owe, a conversation you need to clean up with
someone, a library book you need to return, a pile of clutter on the counter
- these things take your focus away from pursuing your goal. The more
attention, energy and focus you have to put toward your goal the better, and
clearing up any unfinished business will give you more access to that energy
you need.

As you read these tips, which ones seem most pertinent to you? Hit reply
and let me know what tweaks you’ll make toward pursuing your goal – I love
knowing what you’re up to!

Let Your Business Turn You On: Special Offer

Posted by on Oct 11, 2011 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Remember last week when I asked if you felt like you could use a boost, a bit of a kick start to reconnect with your business?  Here’s something I’ve put together for you along those very lines and I hope you’ll take me up on it!

Through Oct. 26 I’m running a special offer:
* 3 one-hour coaching sessions for the price of two *plus* a copy of my workbook “Let Your Business Turn You On: An Entrepreneurial Action Guide”.
* During these 3 sessions we’ll focus on your business using principles outlined in the workbook, all in service of getting you and your business realigned and moving.

This is for sure a special offer, as the cost is only $495.  My normal coaching rates are $675 for three sessions and the workbook sells for $45.  If you haven’t grabbed the calculator yet, I’ll do the math – 3 sessions/$675 + workbook/$45 = $720.  And for the next two weeks you can get the sessions and workbook for $495 total, a savings of $225. Cost-wise, that’s a free session and a free workbook; pretty decent, eh?

~ Ready to do this? Got questions?  Hit reply and talk to me! ~

If you’re wondering about taking advantage of this offer, ponder these points:
* It’s a low risk way to check out coaching to see if you like it
* The sessions are targeted on the aspects of your business where you need them most
* You’ll realign your business with your strengths and passions
* I’ll support you in taking the necessary steps and creating the change you want to make – no more doing it alone
* If you’re feeling stuck in some aspect of your business my outside perspective can shake you loose

Here’s a peak at the Workbook table of contents:
Part 1 – Be yourself, lay the foundation
Part 2 – Get your Mojo workin’
Part 3 – Review your financial obligations
Part 4 – Gather your ideal work ingredients
Part 5 – Create a compelling vision
Part 6 – Overcome obstacles
Part 7 – Take it to the streets
Part 8 – Celebrate
Bonus material includes: A Manifesto to inspire you to take a stand for yourself and your business, and get permission go for what you want, as well as the Formula for Business Love & Success

Curious?  If you’re ready to sign up for the package, fantastic!  Contact me and we’ll get your sessions all set up.

Not sure if this is for you?  Call or email me and we’ll have a chat and find out if this is fit.

Lessons from Nick Lowe

Thanks, Nick
Recently I listened to an interview on Fresh Air with Nick Lowe. He was talking about success, fame, being human and becoming fully himself.  He mentioned that when he had his biggest fame he wasn’t fully in touch with himself – he had a great time, but found it tiring to be focued on staying relevant, being clever, looking cool.  Once the intial arc of fame passed he actully got in touch with what he really wanted to create, who he really wanted to be, and set about creating that person and that music.  Johnny Cash was his father-in-law for a time, and gave him the advice to just be himself and true success would follow; that’s what had worked for Johnny.  Looking back on Nick Lowe’s career I’d say he’s been successful in making his way professionally, based on who he is personally , *rather than* based on what he thought he should do (as he did during his fame in the 70′s).  Thanks Nick – you make it sound easy and make so much sense.

What facade are you putting up that may be stopping you from true fulfillment and success?  Hit reply and let me know, I’d love to hear what action you’ll take to overcome it!

If you find yourself stuck today, here’s how to get unstuck

Posted by on Sep 7, 2011 in Newsletter, Transparency, Vision | 0 comments

Greetings!
Hi ~
Summer has arrived in San Francisco and I am enjoying a clear, sunny and warm day – it feels like heaven!  Having the space and freedom that great weather brings fills my mind with possiblities.  It also reminds me how often my mind closes down to possiblities and gets tripped up on the smallest of things.  Today I’m sharing one of my favorite tools with you – mind mapping – so that you can open your mind up once again to the fabulousness of a lovely summer day.
Enjoy!

Mind Mapping – for when you’re stuck

Likely you’ve seen and/or used a mind map and are already familiar with it’s simplicity and power.  In case you haven’t used one, or would like a refresher, below is how you can use one specifically when you’re feeling stuck.  This is one of my favorite go to tools when I’m not sure what’s next, I’m a bit lost, or am just plain feeling stuck in the mud.  1.  Get a blank sheet of paper at least 8.5 x 11.

2.  Put the topic you’re feeling stuck about in the center of the page.

3.  Let yourself go stream of consciousness and start writing all that comes to mind about your topic.

4.  Put one stream of thought per branch and follow each branch until you’ve gotten everything about that thought stream out of your head and onto the paper.

5.  Each time you finish a stream of thought go back to the main topic and ask yourself what else is rattling around in your head, thoughts and feelings that you can capture on the map.

6.  When it seems you’ve come to a stop, take a few deep breaths and ask youself, ” What else?” to make sure you’ve gotten all you can out onto the paper.

7.  Repeat this until your entire page is full or your head is empty, whichever comes first.

8.  Here’s a quick example I whipped up in about 2 minutes regarding ideal clients, a topic many of my clients are curious about.  See how stripped down it is – nothing fancy.  Note that these are my personal ramblings re: my ideal clients;  all the places where it says “etc.” are places I would keep going if I was doing this map for reals instead of as an example. (click the picture to see it larger on my blog)

9.  Once you’ve completed the mind map, look at all the information in front you; you can see it’s like a big brain dump.  You can now sort through it with colored pens or pencils and note which thoughts group themselves together, what patterns emerge, what themes are present.  These patterns, themes, etc. can be used to let go of limiting beliefs, develop a plan for action, and take whatever step is next for you.
10.  I’d love to see what you come up with – send me a picture of what your map looks like, what you discovered, and what your next action is!

Mind Mapping as a tool to get *unstuck*

Posted by on Sep 6, 2011 in Transparency | 0 comments

Mind mapping is a great way to sort out your thoughts, cough up the contents of your brain, and gain perspective on whatever feels like it’s got you stuck.  Give it a try and let me know the results by leaving a comment!

1. Get a blank sheet of paper at least 8.5 x 11.
