=KRISTINE CAREY ~ CATALYST=

Fall has arrived and it’s cool and rainy here this week. The San Francisco Giants have secured their spot in the World Series and the entire town is on Orange Fire! Business-wise, I’m completing a few incomplete items that will help me sleep at night, enlisted the help of an technology expert, and have rented a part-time office space in North Beach where I can work on the writing I keep threatening to do. Things are looking up here; hope they are for you, too!

Happy Fall ~

Kris

=Business Success on Your Own Terms=

Has this ever happened to you? You’re talking to someone about your business and next thing you know they are telling you what to do to make your business successful, or more successful. Perhaps you decide you want to learn more about marketing your business, and you do a google search and find 100 different people and systems, all saying that if you follow their 10 step formula you’ll achieve success in 90 days. Or you’re having a conversation with a colleague, sharing aspects about your respective businesses, and you realize that you don’t feel as successful now as you did at the beginning of the conversation; they have a different measure of success, and you don’t measure up.
It can be disheartening to have these experiences (ask me how I know). This is why it’s important for you to develop your own definition of success and stick to it; it’s easy to get swayed by others or the marketplace. The truth is, it’s your business and you get to do it your way. Success on your terms. Questions is, how do you figure out what those terms are?

3 Steps of Defining Success for Yourself

Write Your Own Definition of Success
The dictionary describes success as the favorable outcome of something attempted. Look at those whose businesses you admire – how are they defining success? Does their definition work for you? Can you borrow any good ideas from them about success? Become a student of what success looks like to others and run it through your own filter. Pretty soon you’ll know what feels successful for you.

Ditch the “Should” Conversations
It’s common to have a conversation in your head that goes something like, “A successful business looks like this ____ and does these things ____ and makes this amount of money annually ____.” Thing is, every business is different and maybe you aren’t good at those certain things others tell you you “should” be doing. Instead, what do you want to do and what are you good at? Give a new idea try and see if it works – if it does, keep doing it. If it doesn’t, try something else. Experiment until you find a place that is free from any hint of “should”.

Create a Success Environment
Creating a success environment is vital to staying motivated and keeping yourself on track. This means surrounding yourself with people who support you and finding mentors and others who inspire you. It also means making sure your physical environment is a place that feels functional, productive and creative. However best you work, do your best to be in that space, physically, mentally and emotionally, as often as possible.

Example

A great example of living her own definition of success is my mentor coach and great friend, Andrea Lee. She’s been in business for many years and run many different kinds of businesses. Success for her means she’s making a difference in people’s lives and living up to a standard of service, dedication and integrity that she set for herself. Success also means that her businesses make money and a profit. There have been many over the years who have naysayed her methods, and her messages have created a stir. All the while she has been successful, as she defines it, and she and her business are thriving as a result.

Have fun defining your own Business Success! Hit reply and let me know how you define success and how that’s worked out for you.
