The Definition of Success

Your definition of success in business and life

What does success mean to you?

According to Google, success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.

The Academy of Coaching Excellence, where I got my coaching certification, defines success as doing what you said you were going to do, with ease.

Notice neither definition mentions a big house, fancy car, or piles of money in the bank.

Nor do they say anything about the challenges or obstacles that you’ll face along the way. What they do say is that success is up to you – accomplishing something you said you wanted to accomplish.

The trick is to make that accomplishment something you value, so that you can truly feel the success you’ve achieved.

Defining success isn’t something a lot of us think about; it can feel like something that’s always just been there, part of the atmosphere. Family, friends, society, portrayals in magazines or social media – all of these and more affect how successful you feel, especially if you haven’t thought about defining success on your own terms.

Living out of a definition of success that isn’t a match for you can be painful; it sets you up to feel like a failure when that often isn’t the case at all. By defining success yourself, you’re liberated, free to focus on what matters most to you, your clients, and your business.

So let’s take a look…

How do you define success?

If you look at your definition, is your business successful?

Check to see if you’re living out of a definition of success that’s not a fit for you. Are you ready to let go of this definition, and embrace your own?

If not, why? What’s missing?

This is exactly where business reinvention begins.
